  • What is alcohol? Ethyl alcohol, or ethanol, is an intoxicating ingredient found in beer, wine, and liquor. Alcohol is produced by the fermentation of yeast, sugars, and starches.
  • Brain scan studies suggest that the brain anatomy of an alcoholic begins to return to normal within six months of abstinence; however, cognitive function has not always been reported to return when the brain scans appear normal.
  • A 150-pound man would have to drink approximately 18 beverage units (one unit consists of 5 oz. of wine or one and a half ounces of spirits) in about a hour in order to reach the lethal blood alcohol concentration which is approximately 0.4%.
  • When combined, alcohol and tobacco drastically increase the risk of certain cancers.
