Does heavy chronic drinking have health consequences? Absolutely. Chronic heavy drinking can result in serious damage to the liver, heart, brain and other vital organs. Such severe physical damage may result in serious illnesses or even early death.
There is some evidence that the flavored beverages known as' malternatives' or "alopops" are increasing the amount of alcohol that teenagers are consuming due to the masking of the taste of hard alcohol.
Health care costs associated with alcohol abuse in 1995 were nearly twice those of drug abuse-related costs ($23 billion vs. $12 billion).
For most people who drink, alcohol is a pleasant accompaniment to social activities. Moderate alcohol use-up to two drinks per day for men and one drink per day for women and older people-is not harmful for most adults. (A standard drink is one 12-ounce bottle or can of either beer or wine cooler, one 5-ounce glass of wine, or 1.5 ounces of 80-proof distilled spirits.)
